Taking serious note of the latest decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Administration has speed up the enforcement of ban imposed on the use of polythene carry bags/plastic bags/plates/cups and other allied material in Union Territory of Chandigarh. As per NGT directions there is also provision of imposing fine of Rs.5, 000/- "Environmental Compensation" to the erring person/entity per event, along with seizure of such stocks.

With the help of this discussion platform the Administration requests you to 'report the violations' (attach pictures or other details) regarding use of plastic carry bag/plate/cup and allied items on ww.mygov.in. Also, we would like to read your suggestions/ideas as well as practical/workable solutions for complete imposition of plastic (carry bag/cup/plate and allied items) ban in Chandigarh.

Constant Awareness of plastic ban would help reduce the same till level zero. Few locations like vegetable vendors, shops and retailers should be monitored in a non-corrupt manner. Few places if to use plastic people should pay charges or get their own bags like in the place to buy groceries or retail items. It is everybody's responsibility not use plastics below are certain plastics value which is dangerous. Apart from this to reduce the waste the same plastic can be recycled and re-use

Plastic and polythene usage is not harmful if disposed properly. Plastic is a inert material and being used in household, medical, food, education, industry even in garments and quilts nowadays. Plastic is eco friendly recyclable comparatively and put in use again in the economy. No affordable, convenient and smart substitute of plastic is available till now. Strengthening of segregated garbage collection, promotion to plastic recyclers besides imposition of fine on whosoever litter may work.

Taking cue from implementation in advanced economies like South Korea- Plastic bag should not be available for free and should only be sold at designated places for money. Also, same plastic bags should be the only allowed bag to dispose solid home waste at designated locations. The money collected from selling these bags should be utilized to run this waste disposal process and opening waste disposal centers. Also, all retailers should distribute recyclable cloth bag with their logo to customer

1. In big malls/branded shops - do not sale plastic bags, make mandatory to sale cotton bags in diff size that can be reused. Need to make ways and means of having cotton bags at a price lower than Rs 20 2. Promote paper bags (out of news paper) - will cheap - can be used for small shops, vegetable market, small vendors - replace plastic carry bags 3. Promote paper/alu foil based parcel box - most of the restaurants (at least all Darshinis in Bangalore) use polythene bags to give parcels !!
