The District Administration Baghpat invites citizens, youth, innovators and institutions from across India on MyGov to share innovative and practical ideas to transform the Shri Parshurameshwar Pura Mahadev Mahashivratri Mela into a Zero Waste Mahotsav on theme “Bhakti Bhi, Prakriti Bhi”.

Building on the successful implementation of a Zero Waste model during Falguni Mahashivratri 2026 celebrations, this initiative aims to further strengthen sustainable practices and develop Baghpat as a model for green and responsible religious gatherings in India.

Aligned with the vision of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Swachh Bharat and sustainable tourism, the initiative promotes environmentally responsible behaviour, reduction of waste, resource efficiency and community participation in large public events.

What kind of ideas are we looking for?
1. Participants are encouraged to submit practical, scalable and innovative ideas in areas such as:
a. Waste management and zero waste systems
b. Plastic-free alternatives for melas and religious events
c. Eco-friendly materials and green infrastructure
d. Awareness campaigns and behavioural change strategies
e. Volunteer and youth engagement models
f. Use of technology (apps, QR-based services, monitoring systems, etc.)
g. Sustainable tourism and visitor management

How to participate?
1. Submit your idea in maximum 200–300 words
2. Focus on solutions that can be practically implemented on ground
3. You may include examples, models or case references

What will happen to your ideas?
Selected ideas will be reviewed by the District Administration and considered for implementation during the Shravani Mahashivratri Mela scheduled in second week of August 2026. Selected contributions may also be recognised as part of a district-led innovation initiative and documented as good practices.

This is an opportunity to contribute to building a national model of sustainable religious events, promote environmental responsibility, and strengthen citizen participation in governance. Your ideas can help demonstrate how tradition, technology and sustainability can work together for a better future.

Special recycling booths can be established across the mela where visitors can deposit plastic bottles, cans and recyclable materials. In return, participants can receive appreciation cards or eco-friendly gifts. This encourages active public participation in keeping the mela clean and waste-free

A “Green Decoration Policy” should promote the use of reusable and natural decoration materials instead of plastic banners and thermocol items. Bamboo structures, cloth banners and flower decorations can make the mela eco-friendly while preserving cultural beauty. This can reduce large amounts of decorative waste after the event.

A “One Pilgrim One Cloth Bag” campaign can help eliminate plastic carry bags during the mela. Affordable cloth bags with environmental slogans can be distributed at entry points. Visitors returning plastic bags can receive discounts or rewards. This small initiative can significantly reduce plastic pollution during large gatherings.

A QR-based complaint and monitoring system can help visitors report overflowing bins, littered areas or sanitation issues instantly. The administration can respond quickly using real-time monitoring. LED screens can display cleanliness statistics and encourage public participation. This will improve transparency and efficient mela management.

An “Eco-Seva Volunteer Team” involving NSS students, NCC cadets and local youth can help maintain cleanliness during the mela. Volunteers can guide visitors about waste segregation, plastic-free practices and proper disposal methods. Street plays and announcements can also spread awareness about environmental protection and responsible pilgrimage.

Temple flowers, leaves and food waste generated during the mela can be converted into organic compost instead of being dumped. Separate green bins can be placed for biodegradable waste and managed by local volunteers and self-help groups. The compost can later be used in farms and gardens. This creates a circular waste system and keeps the mela environment clean

A “Zero Waste Bhojan Zone” can be created where all food stalls use reusable steel utensils or biodegradable plates made from leaves and natural materials. Vendors following eco-friendly practices can receive Green Stall Certificates. Waste segregation bins should be placed near all food areas. This will reduce plastic and thermocol waste while promoting responsible food service practices during the mela.

A “Bring Your Own Bottle” campaign can reduce plastic waste during the Mahashivratri Mela. Free water refill stations should be installed across the mela area so visitors can refill bottles instead of buying plastic bottles. Digital counters can display how many plastic bottles were avoided daily. Volunteers can encourage pilgrims to use reusable bottles and cloth bags. This initiative supports sustainable tourism, cleanliness and environmental awareness under the message “Bhakti Bhi, Prakriti Bhi.”

A “Green Bhakt Reward System” can help make the Shri Parshurameshwar Pura Mahadev Mahashivratri Mela a Zero Waste Mahotsav. Visitors who use cloth bags, refill water bottles, avoid single-use plastic and properly segregate waste can scan QR codes placed across the mela area to earn “Green Bhakt Points.” These points can be redeemed for free water refills, eco-friendly souvenirs or certificates. A simple WhatsApp-based system can make participation easy without requiring a separate app. LED screens can display daily impact such as plastic avoided and waste recycled. Youth volunteers can also guide pilgrims about cleanliness and sustainability. This idea combines devotion, technology and environmental responsibility while supporting Mission LiFE and Swachh Bharat under the message “Bhakti Bhi, Prakriti Bhi.”
